Equine Consumer Reports: Leather New Balsam

Best Buy: Leather Conditioning Category

The Leather New Balsam is in a tie with Leather Therapy Restorer & Conditioner for best performance in its category of conditioners.

Leather New Balsam has officially become a necessity in our testers' tack boxes. It is a great once a month follow up for any leather cleaner and works wonders on black, brown, old or new leather alike.

Leather New Balsam conditions deep into the leather making it supple and soft. The label claims that Leather New Balsam will “lock moisture in, keep wetness out,” and our results agree that it does.

Although Leather New Balsam didn’t make leather incredibly well polished, it still made leather look and feel healthy and left a pleasant scent.

It doesn’t matter if you want to enhance your leather, restore a dry, crusty old saddle, or simply do regular maintenance, we found Leather New Balsam to perform well at each. We’ve gently tested it on expensive soft leather riding boots with positive results but recommend using it sparingly. The label cautions against use on soft, porous leather such as suede, buckskin, leather furniture or leather clothing.

Leather New Balsam is simple to apply and if done right will not leave a greasy film on leather but give it a beautiful, long-lasting sheen.

We believe it is a definite must-have before storing tack or equipment for extended periods of time (i.e. winter or post-show season). The results are not instant, but within hours and even days, the leather is visibly suppler, showing that it is not just a ‘masking agent.’

No matter what leather cleaner you use as a base, we recommend using Leather New Balsam to sustain your leather’s colour and extend the leather’s longevity. Leather New Balsam is perfect for sprucing your saddle’s look before a horse show, or safeguarding your tack in storage. One of the best conditioners on the market.

Stay posted for how Leather New Balsam stood up against mold/mildew and other weather conditions.
