Review: The Rider’s Rasp is a revolutionary new tool inspired by W.J. Tomlinson (American Farriers Association Certified Journeyman Farrier), designed to promote long-term balance between professional trims by rounding the edges of the hoof wall.
After hearing much interest in these new tools, Cinch Magazine decided to find out once and for all if the Rider’s Rasp is indeed a useful tool or mere gimmick. Here’s what we discovered:
The Rider’s Rasp is virtually fool-proof and easy to use. With its ergonomic shape (something which testers found very comfortable to grip), and innovative rasp placement, even those who had never rasped a hoof in their life were at ease.
The Rider’s Rasp is much more convenient to use than a traditional rasp, in that (especially among smaller horses) there is no worry of bumping the rasp handle into the horse’s belly or cutting your hands during its use.
The Rider’s Rasp is a perfect addition to any grooming routine, enhancing the health of the foot, which can be done in minutes. Even professionals who specialize in hoof care may find they enjoy ‘finishing’ the hoof with the Rider’s Rasp as compared to a traditional rasp, particularly among horses who are nervous or misbehave during trims, as it is much safer for both parties involved.
We found that horses with problem feet in particular benefit from the Rider’s Rasp, in that problems can be resolved sooner thanks to prolonged balance. For these horses especially, farrier costs can be significantly reduced, being able to extend the duration between professional trims.
This tool’s limitations are in that it designed only for rounding and removing flares, not to ‘trim’ hooves as a regular rasp would. However, for most horse owners who have limited hoof expertise upon which a traditional rasp could prove hazardous, the Rider’s Rasp is a tool which can be relied on with confidence to promote proper hoof balance without harming the horse.
On a final note, the Rider’s Rasp is extremely durable, and can handle being dropped and fumbled around without blemish. The rasps are replaceable, and we were pleasantly surprised on their longevity, considering the fineness of the blades.
Overall, the Rider’s Rasp is certainly not a gimmick, but rather a handy tool that novice and professional alike will be glad they added to the grooming caddy. A tool which helps spread awareness to the hoof, prolongs hoof balance, and removes flares and chipping. Humble in appearance, it is perhaps among your line of best defenses for the welfare of your horse. To find out more about the Rider's Rasp, please visit their website here.
