(Above) Just a small sample of the many signage options Saucy Piaffe offers.

Saucy Piaffe began with the search for the perfect stall sign-one that was upscale, high quality and unique. Founder, Elizabeth Rhodes, had just purchased her first horse, but not finding signs that met her needs, she sought to create her own. Her first stall sign was simple in construction- a cardboard printout on a foam core base.

People began to notice and inquire about Elizabeth’s design, and so she came to realize that the marketplace had a niche to fill for stall signage. Before long, Ember Johnstone joined the Saucy team, adding her own expertise to the company.

As time went on, Saucy Piaffe grew into a full-fledged business by way of friends, acquaintances, and their own online community. Elizabeth notes, “You can’t be afraid to be proud of what you do, and when we speak about our product line we sincerely believe in our vision, and truly love what we sell.”

Today, Saucy represents a new image- adopting graphic design skills to create custom stall signs which capture the essence of each individual horse. Of course, the signs are no longer based on foam cores, but rather high-quality solid pine and brass plates to create a product that can be enjoyed for years to come.

The business continues to grow, merging into signage for a variety of applications, including not only stall signs, but custom barn signage and engraved plates. Recently, the arrival of pedigree plaques was unveiled, which are proving to be the perfect addition to any upscale breeding operation.

Elizabeth and Ember both love working with the people, taking special appreciation to not only the customers, but those who recognize that their business remains relevant, even in the state of the current economy. The customers are especially pleased with the personal touches that Saucy embraces- something as simple as adding handwritten thank-you notes or remembering that the sign is a birthday gift.

Elizabeth further testifies that the ‘warm and fuzzies’ are a large part of their motivation, and if the ‘feel good’ aspect of Saucy were ever to dissipate, the true essence of Saucy would no longer exist. “We nurture this part of the business because it is who we are.”

Though big plans are in the works to expand Saucy’s product line, Ember and Elizabeth want to ensure that the integrity of their brand is never sacrificed. Their values are at their core: a whimsy, yet professional approach to doing business. “This is, in essence, Saucy Piaffe; taking something highly structured and perfectly executed (piaffe), and infusing it with a little whimsiness (sauciness).”
